FAQ: Occult Secrets of the Underworld

Do I need Underworld Races & Classes to use Occult Secrets of the Underworld?

Yes. While the concepts themselves can be divorced from their flavor quite easily, Occult Secrets of the Underworld is intended to be an expansion of Underworld Races & Classes, and as such, references the material.

What's up with the whole "occult"-angle?

When Occult Adventures for PFRPG was released, it represented a paradigm-shift for the game; instead of new combinations of previously released material and narrow focuses that escalated the math, Occult Adventures focused on emphasizing player agenda and hardcoded flavor back into the options. This flavor could be easily reskinned, but it provided a first hook for the players and GMs to work with. This book tries to adhere to a similar design paradigm.

Okay, so Occult Adventures support for PFRPG. Do I need Occult Adventures to use this book?

While the material makes heavy use of Occult Adventures material, said content is available online, legally and for free, on the various PRD and SRD-pages. The only book you really need is Underworld Races & Classes.

But I'm playing 5e - do we just get a conversion?

No! Since Occult Adventures heavily referenced several complex rules-constructions in PFRPG, a linear conversion would not have done 5e justice! Instead, I redesigned each concept and theme from the ground up, making sure that it works for 5e without referencing PFRPG-material.

So, it's not a conversion?

No! The PFRPG and 5e-version, while sporting roughly the same ideas, differ radically in the implementation of the content. They are, in essence, two different books that happen to share the same core-ideas. That’s how I wrote them.

Can you give us an example or two?

Well, there obviously in no warlock class in PFRPG, and I really wanted new warlock tools in 5e, so some material I wrote for 5e was translated differently to PFRPG. There also are favored class options for PFRPG in the book - something that does not exist in 5e. Similarly, one PFRPG-archetype is based on the troop type, and since 5e puts a different value on pets, the class option for 5e ended up being pet-less, taking a different angle towards realizing the concept. 5e GMs can look forward to concise rules for the colloid terrain and the 6-step-condition progression for Colloid Melancholia.

"Occult" means more than just acting as a shorthand for a design philosophy!?!

Yes, and I am very cognizant of that fact. There is, for example, the “Red River” that connects all, the metaphysical notion that a lot of creatures bleed red and thus, share a common bond; there is a class option that ties into self-augmentation, dabbling in Transhumanism…just for gnomes instead!

Last updated: July 12, 2018 17:31

Can I use the class options without this flavor?

Yes. It’s easy enough to divorce the metaphysical underpinnings from the material herein.

Last updated: July 12, 2018 17:31

Do I have to know these concepts/philosophies/weltanschauungen to get the most out of this book?

No! Consider them to be optional notions that can enhance the roleplaying experience, but are not required.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
